What to do with downgraded food?

It depends on the commodity and needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Options include

  • diversion, neat or blended, for animal feed
  • blending at 5–10% with good quality food
  • export to another country (or return to the country of origin)
  • destruction

Every case is different, and local circumstances and priorities will strongly influence the end use of the foodstuff. If the food value (+ transport, storage, etc.) exceed US$ 10,000 LEGM must be notified.

No WFP commodities are to be sold or destroyed without the formal, written, specific instructions of WFP (See section on Loss Mitigation).

No risks must be taken with regard to WFP commodities, particularly with deteriorated food intended for human consumption. It is important that damaged commodities do not subsequently appear on the market for human consumption.
